Many
years ago when I was about 10 my mum & dad took me to see Balmoral
Castle in the
Scottish
highlands, the summer home of the Royal family,
|
My
dad was a keen gardener, during our visit we went into the walled vegtable
garden,
I
can remember there was an old man on his knees weeding in amongst the cabbages
my
dad was talking to him for ages getting information on growing vegtables,
the
man called me over he put some seeds in his hand held it out,a small bird
a
sparrow I think landed on his hand and started feeding
that
was the first time I saw such trust and contact,
|
Many
years later my Dad had to take early retirment due to ill health
he
spent most of his time in the garden tending to his vegtables and roses
over
the years he built up trust with the birds, day after day he would stand
holding
out food to the birds no takers but eventually a sparrow landed on his
hand
|
It
did that regular and used to sit next to him in the garden, the bond was
there
and
it used to wait on him coming out, sadly when he passed away the sparrow
would
still sit near the back door,
|
A
few years ago we went on holiday to a small village in Devon called Mousehole
its
pronounced mousel, there is a bird hospital there injured birds are brought
in
from
all over, when the birds recover some of them dont want to go home and they
hang
about the village, one day we were walking near there when one of the volenteers
was
walking home and about 6 or 8 jackdaws were flying around her as she walked
home,
later
we saw one of them tapping on her window with its beak looking for food,
|
for many years we
have been talking to and feeding the birds in our last garden
we had thrushes blackbirds
wrens and a robin that used to get in amongst our
hands as we were weeding
the garden as soon as we uncovered a worm
they would dive in for
it complete trust, now that we have recently moved house
we will have to start
the process all over again we have already started
talking to a robin and
it sits and listens
